Nobel Prize

On Oct. 3, Yoshinori Ohsumi from Japan won the Nobel Prize.  He was given this award for his accomplishments in medicine and research into autophagy.  Ohsumi is a cell biologist and professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology's Institute of Innovative Research.

 

New Line of Google Phones

Google announced its new line of products on Oct. 4.  The Google Pixel phone was the most popular piece of technology to come out of this group.  The Pixel claims to have the highest rated smart phone camera, a battery that lasts all day and unlimited storage for photos and videos.  

 

Clowns

All through October, stories of clowns luring people into the woods and standing on the sides of roads swept through America.  People took caution in order to avoid the creepy clowns and stay safe through the Halloween weekend.

 

“Ferguson October”

This protesting event brought hundreds of people to the streets of St. Louis on Oct. 11.  People from all over the world came together to march in support of the 18-year-old boy killed by a police officer in the nearby suburb of Ferguson.  This march also touched on the broader issue of police brutality.

 

“Ouija: Origin of Evil”

The new Ouija movie hit theaters on Oct. 21.  This movie takes place in 1967 Los Angeles with a psychic who obtains Ouija board that allows her to talk to the dead.  Although this is great for her psychic business, it also allows a ghost to possess her 9-year-old daughter. Ouija is rated PG-13 and lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

 

Samsung Galaxy Note 7

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is lit, but not in the good way.  The new Galaxy phone quickly made the news with various stories of its battery cell igniting.  Samsung announced shortly after that they were stopping sales of the galaxy note and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned consumers to power off the phone and not use it.  

 

MacBook Pro

The new MacBook Pro, which is faster and more powerful than before, was announced on Oct. 27.  The new MacBook is thinner and lighter, has the brightest, most colorful Mac notebook display ever, and has a new touch bar.  Apple used the touch bar as their biggest selling point.  The multi-touch enabled strip of glass built into the keyboard allows for instant access to certain tools, such as emojis.
