The Rise Above Conference on April 19 at Milligan College is a chance for students engaged in faculty-mentored research to showcase their work. This year’s conference showcased 22 different student projects.

Various topics included Dollywood, Gender Equality, Roman Catholicism and even Bumper Stickers. The presentations were set up in Derthick from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. with the keynote lecture beginning at 7 p.m. in Hyder Auditorium.

Dr. Ted Thomas, a professor of humanities, history and German closed the conference with a lecture titled “How Research Unfold: A Case Study.”

During his sabbatical, Thomas took a semester abroad in Heidelberg, Germany to conduct research. He spoke about this, and talked about his encounter with Herman Mass, who was a pastor during World War II. Mass, also helped rescue German Jews.

Thomas’ lecture highlighted the research process: find a topic and find the funds needed to complete the research.

This was overall an opportunity for students to share their experiences and findings with the Milligan community and beyond.
