A third place individual finish from Milligan senior Mitchell Sutton, who shot 215 in three rounds, led the Milligan men’s golf team to an overall third place finish in last week’s Direct Qualifier Championship at the Governor’s Towne Club in Acworth, GA.

Milligan placed behind conference rivals Reinhardt and Tennessee Wesleyan who finished first and second, respectively. They also finished ahead of Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Atlanta, who finished the day in fourth place.

The Buffs also had big contributions from Junior Josh Gambrell and senior Andrew Simonsen who tied for 14th place individually with a score of 225.

Two major contributions came from a couple of freshmen as well. Nick Sewell finished the day tied for 36th place out of 53, and Cody Carlson moved up to tie for 12th after being tied for 27th after the first day.

“I felt like this was our best tournament of the year,” said Carlson. “We played three complete rounds and played to our top potential. We ended the season on a great mark.”

Milligan will be losing two of its top golfers next year, who are seniors, but a couple freshman are looking to make greater impacts in their sophomore campaigns.
