New Class Offerings for Spring 2015
By Rachel Hulshult
Several new courses are being offered for the first time in the spring, in many different areas, according to Associate Registrar Stacy Tramel.
One of the new courses, Science Fiction and Fantasy in Film and TV will study “international examples of science fiction, fantasy, as well as ‘hybrid’ examples like superhero films, some types of Eastern European animation, ‘science fantasy,’ science fiction horror, and Japanese science fiction and fantasy,” according to Professor Kenny Suit, associate professor of communications. This will include Star Trek, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Avengers, Star Wars, Aliens, and Godzilla, among others.
Another new offering, Arthurian Legends will “be a lot of fun,” said Dr. Sarah Lindsay, assistant professor of English and humanities. It will “trace the way stories about Arthur change from their medieval origins, through their rediscovery in the 19th century, up to their appearance in modern novels, films and TV shows.”
If you’re interested in human rights, then International Human Rights might be worth taking. It will consist of “talking about contemporary human rights issues around the world, like modern day slavery and human trafficking,” said Dr. Amy Edmonds, assistant professor of political science, “I love these topics and think they’re applicable to a wide range of majors.” They will look at the causes behind these “human rights abuses” as well as how we can counter them or what we can do to help, said Edmonds.
The full list of courses with their descriptions will be released on Oct. 28th.
