Students awoke to the sweet sound of Christmas music yesterday as part of Milligan’s long-standing tradition of Wonderful Wednesday.
Classes were canceled and there was nothing to do but spend the 79-degree day celebrating America’s favorite holidays.
Fourteen events were held throughout the day starting with the Christmas Brunch, a campus-wide Easter Egg Hunt, the Arbor Day Tree Climb by the library, the St. Patrick’s Waterslide across from Buffalo Creek, Thanksgiving Dinner and the new Mardi Gras King Pie Contest.
Students also organized an underground milk chug – a beloved Wonderful Wednesday tradition that wasn’t on the schedule this year. Senior Branden Jones won the event. This was his second time as milk chug champion. Jones also beat eight students in the pie-eating contest held minutes later outside Sutton Hall.
The day’s other activities included Memorial Day Intramurals with tournaments in ultimate frisbee, dodge ball and volleyball. A President’s Day Dunking Booth was featured on the Village Commons where President Bill Greer, Dr. David Campbell and Dr. John-Paul Abner willingly faced balls hurled toward the red button that signaled their fates.
A Fourth of July fireworks display on the soccer fields capped off the night. Students, faculty and alumni gathered to watch the event on the black steps at Anglin Field. A screening of Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas” on Gregory lawn followed the display.
