Meet Meaghan Roland. She’s a senior from Lexington, Ky., with a major in fine arts (emphasis in photography), and two minors in Bible and digital media. Roland received her first camera as a sophomore in high school, but her first experience in a darkroom was at Milligan. Under the direction of photography professor Alice Anthony, she developed her skills and fell in love with the art.
“Bernice Abbott was known for saying that ‘Photography helps people to see,’” said Roland. “I think this is why I am in love with photography. I notice the interesting shapes of the objects around me, the light and shadows that fall across subjects, and the colors of the earth that seem to naturally complement each other.”
After graduation, Roland hopes to complete a residency with Mountain Christian Church, working with their digital media team. She wants to use photography as a tool to help people, by telling people’s stories or bringing awareness to issues.
“I love that photographs help you capture memories, history, and stories,” she said. “I’ve been given this gift, so I want to use it to show God’s love and help others.”
Roland’s senior photography exhibition is this Sunday, April 13 in the Derthick Art Gallery from 2-4 p.m. Her show, “People of Accomplishment,” features over 40 black and white portraits of Milligan students, faculty and staff.
