Who is Unicycle Girl?

By Alyssa Bartlett

Seventeen-year-old Carissa Limiero, or as you may know her, Unicycle Girl, was born in Downers Grove, Illinois, and moved to Bakersfield, California, at the age of six. It was there that her brother, Anthony Limiero, and his friend decided to learn how to ride a unicycle one boring, summer day. They mastered unicycling by watching YouTube videos and in turn recruited about 11 of their friends and named themselves the "Unicrew." Limiero's grandpa, an engineer, even built them a unicycle skate park in their own backyard. Right before Limiero came to Tennessee, she decided she wanted to learn, too. Limiero was hesitant at first. "I'm super clumsy, and I always hurt myself," Limiero said. However, as soon as she bought her P.O. Box at Milligan, she used her graduation money to order her very own unicycle online for $135.

Limiero practiced diligently in order to improve her skills, including turning, going off curbs, and free mounting. Within the first month of learning, she fell backwards, landed on her hands, and sprained her wrist. That didn't stop her, though; she continues to practice mostly in the evenings once or twice a week, either between Kegley and Seeger or on Mary Sword Commons and has since become a member of the exclusive Unicrew. Limiero has met four people on campus that have claimed to unicycle and is excited to get to know them better. "I ran into the unicycle boy in Derthick today and had a little bit of a fangirl moment. I would really like to hang out with him and start our own unicycle crew on campus," Limiero said.

The Unicrew can be found on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube and has recently obtained a sponsorship by Bikes and Boards Company. They can be found at youtube.com/unicycleunicrew.
