New programs are in the works at Milligan College with opportunities for students to consider. The school is in the process of determining if an Engineering program would suit the students and campus as a whole.
“Engineering could be a big step for Milligan, “ said Garland Young, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Milligan College.
Young, speaking of the number of steps it will take before an engineering program can be determined, said that before anything, Milligan hired a consultant to propose a feasibility study to see if engineering would be a proper fit.
This study will show the components the college has to consider: faculty resources, equipment, accreditation requirements, finances, etc.
Around Christmas last year, they received the feasibility study. Ongoing discussions took place to determine all aspects of starting the program, both positive and negative.
A reoccurring concern mentioned was the financial cost of the program.
Last summer, the college received a million dollar gift that will be designated to assist funding for the engineering program, as well as update the preexisting science facilities.
Along with donors, Milligan has also been reaching out to corporate organizations for additional support. They are insuring the student’s success in the engineering program, to see if companies will provide internships and possible jobs upon students’ graduation.
“The most recent step that has been taken was earlier this month.” said Young. “Our academic committee purposed to our faculty new majors in mechanical and electrical engineering.”
This proposal will go through two meetings with the faculty, as well as approval by the college’s trustees, who will have the final determination of the program.
The second meeting regarding the proposal for the engineering program will be Oct. 14.
