On Wednesday, Milligan’s men’s soccer team had their initial taste of conference play against St. Andrews University at the first home game of the season. Going into the game 2-2-0, there was anticipation from both the fans and the players to keep the undefeated streak alive.
The Buffs started off slow in the first half, giving up a single goal. After that, both teams were held scoreless for the rest of the half, leaving St. Andrews with the 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the 53rd minute, sophomore forward Jesse Ramoya scored off a lofted shot over the goal-keeper and off the near post to tie the game at 1-1.
The game went back and forth until St. Andrews’ Brendon Duncan scored in the 86th minute. This followed a red card given to Milligan player Anthony Matekenya, which limited Milligan to only 10 players. The game ended with St. Andrews on top 2-1.
“Our set break downs at the end are what helped St. Andrews score in the last minutes of the game,” said junior middle Calvin Mangunda.
Milligan is now 2-2-1 and will be looking to even out their conference record on the road at Truett-McConnell College on Sep. 20.
