MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN -Although it was muggy and dreary outside, it was all sunshine and smiles in Steve Lacy Field House for the Milligan College Women’s Volleyball team. After five tough games against the Union College Bulldogs, the Lady Buffs made a quick comeback to win the match.
The match began on Saturday morning with a four-point lead on the Bulldogs. However, Union came back fighting strong making the game tied, 25-25. Lady Bulldog’s Paige Moore and Jillian Stuff played strong and brought Union to victory, 27-25.
The Lady Buffs weren’t ready to give up yet. Game two (25-20) and three (25-18) were strong wins for Lady Buff’s offense.
In game two, Samantha Bruinius, true freshman Marissa Langford and Bailey Thomas shared eight kills.
In game three, Bruinus noted two service aces while Grace Ann Moorehouse and Emilee Linkous had four kills.
After two losses, the Lady Bulldogs make a come back in the fourth game gaining a four-point run on the Lady Buffs giving them the win, 25-21. This ultimately tied the match 2-2.
It was the ultimate death match in Steve Lacy for the win of game five to determine who ultimately won the match. The Lady Buffs showed determination playing an unflawed game giving them the win, 15-10.
The Lady Buffs logged nine kills in the match. Jenna Conkin, Jessica Davenport, Langford and Bruinus recorded two kills. Adding to what she considers her best match this season, Linkous picks up the remaining kill for the game.
After a few rough tournaments the last few weeks, the young team made up of mostly sophomores and juniors were long over due this victory.
According to Women’s Volleyball Coach Doneva Bays the team is slowly progressing for a better season ahead.
“We’re not where I want us to be cause we are still making a few errors,” says Bays. “That service errors and hitting errors that we could cut out of our offense-- that would help us. But, as the most part I’m very pleased with our performance.”
The Milligan College Lady Buffs continued their winning streak during another close match against Brenau University, 3-4 Saturday afternoon.
The Milligan College Women’s Volleyball plays against Emory and Henry in Emory, Virginia on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 pm.
